Dear Parents and Carers of Year 4,
Welcome to Year 4!
We hope you have all had an enjoyable summer holiday and we hope you are looking forward to this academic year!
Each term we will be exploring these exciting topics to link and inspire our learning:
Autumn term – The Roman Empire
Spring term – History of Transport
Summer term – Modern Europe
Our first topic is The Roman Empire, and this will be launched with a Roman dress up day on Friday 18th September. Children may come to school dressed as a Roman, and will participate in different Roman activities.
Uniform
Please could you ensure that your child’s uniform, particularly jumpers, are all appropriately named, even if you simply write their initials on the label this will allow us to reunite them with their rightful owners!
PE
Indoor PE will be on Tuesdays and outdoor PE will be on Fridays. Please ensure PE kits are in school everyday. Please make sure there are spare jumpers and/or long bottoms as we still go outdoors in the colder weathers.
Homework
Homework will be set on Google Classrooms but also provided here for your reference.
Reading – Please encourage your children to read at home for at least 10 minutes every day. This can be any book from non-fiction, biographies, comics or fiction books. Please make sure they are writing in their reading record and please sign it (even if they have read independently). Their reading record should stay in their bag so they can write in it - in and out of school. We will collect reading records in daily and award Dojo house points for regular reading.
Spelling – We are sending home a spelling log with spellings for each week. We will teach the words and have spelling tests each week. The spelling log includes ideas of spelling games to play to practise spellings at home.
Maths – Please practise Timestable Rock Stars (TTRS) to practise recalling timestables up to 12x. The soundcheck on TTRS is similar to the statutory Year 4 Multiplication Check that children will take in June.
Project – This term there will be a project that spans a few weeks, to enable time for creativity!
“Create a piece of work about the Romans”
This could involve designing and making a mosaic, creating a Colosseum, presenting a powerpoint, writing a factfile, etc. The possibilities are endless! Projects will be shared with the class, so please ensure all projects are in by Thursday 15th October.
We will endeavour to share updates and photos on Class Dojo, so please check regularly. We’re looking forward to the year ahead and hope you are too!
Many thanks,
Miss Ball and Mrs Terry-Smith
