Our School Values

Term 1 – Friendship (and Community)

We work together in a way that benefits everyone. We aim to create a sense of belonging.

Two people are better than one. They get more done by working together. If one person falls, the other can help him. Ecclesiastes 4 v 9-10

Term 2 – Respect

Respect, at Marcham, is treating people in a way that makes them feel that they are valuable, cared for and worthwhile.

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 7 v 12

Term 3 - Compassion

We show concern through kind words, thoughts and actions.

And this commandment we have from Him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”

1 John 4:21

Term 4 - Responsibility

We think about Responsibility as taking care of the things around us that need to be done. We know that taking responsibility does not always get recognised, but it is a value that builds up our community, and will make life better for all of us.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.

Term 5 - Perseverance

We recognise the importance of our continued effort in doing something - despite it being difficult or taking time to achieve. Learning is a journey and success is working through the process of the journey as well as the outcomes.

As for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.

Term 6 - Courage

Being courageous means being brave when you are scared or anxious. It’s about support, faith and hope.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Promoting British Values:

In 2011, the government defined British Values as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. In Marcham school, we promote these values through our school vision, values and aims, our curriculum and teaching and learning strategies, and the enrichment activities in which our pupils participate.

Democracy: The creation of a new School Council each year replicates the democratic process. With each class from Year 1 upwards electing two children to represent their class on the School Council. We also follow the democratic process when electing one member of each class from Year 1 upwards to represent their class on the Worship Committee and Eco Council. The democratic process is also evidenced in daily classroom practice e.g., voting for battle of the books in Year 1.

The Rule of Law: At Marcham we have a behaviour policy which enables all stakeholders: parents, children, staff, and governors, to share responsibility for cultivating and nurturing an atmosphere which is conducive to a successful school. Our rules and expectations are consistently reinforced throughout the day as well as through Collective Worship and when responding to behaviour. Children are taught the value and reasons behind rules, the responsibilities that this involves and the natural consequences when rules are broken. Our PSHE curriculum supports and explicitly teaches this fundamental British value.

Individual Liberty: Within our school, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment at the same time recognising that their choice impact others. We are proud to be working towards the Rights Respecting Schools Bronze Award, in which children learn about the rights and responsibilities associated with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We provide boundaries for children to enable them to make choices safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Our children have a variety of roles and responsibilities in school , for example Play Leader, Eco council, Worship Committee, responsibilities within Houses.

Mutual Respect: Part of our school ethos and behaviour policy revolves around our core values of Respect, Friendship, Compassion, Responsibility, Perseverance and Courage. Children discuss and explore the value of the term in Collective Worship, PSHE lessons and within class. Children who demonstrate positive use of our values are recognised for doing so.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs: Our RE curriculum provides a broad and balanced education on a range of faiths, religions, and cultures. Other cultures are often celebrated as part of other subjects. We also seek opportunities to value the different cultures of children within the school. Whilst being true to our Christian ethos, we recognise that our values are shared with other people of faith and those of none.
